The Serrated Mountains
Montserrat literally means ‘serrated mountain’, a perfect description given the jagged cliffs of the mountain. At the top of the mountain is the beautiful Santa Maria de Montserrat, a Benedictine abbey, one of the most famous popular Christian destinations in Catalonia for over 1,000 years as its Black Madonna is said to have been given by St. Peter.
Santa Maria de Montserrat also houses a museum displaying Caravaggio’s St Gerome and works of other famous Spanish artists like Dali, Picasso, Ribera, and Sorolla. The Escolania, Montserrat’s Boys’ Choir, is one of the oldest in Europe and performs during religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica.
Apart from the abbey, the other key attraction is the well-marked beautiful hiking trails around the Montserrat natural park.
If you are looking to take a day trip from Barcelona, Montserrat should be right on the top of the list.
