Florence is the heart of Tuscany and also in so many ways the real soul of Italy. Any good Florence itinerary will treat to the unspoilt innocence and magnificence of Renaissance art and architecture in Florence, without the political baggage of the Roman Empire. It is a perfect romance for couples, and has a warm embrace for families. You can see Florence in many ways but whatever you choose, you must see:
The Duomo and Giotto’s Campanile: The sheer suddenness and size of the Florence Cathedral will shock you as you come upon it via a narrow lane. The outside and inside are both breathtaking, as is the bell tower with views all around the city.
- David: The Galleria Accademia is a mecca for visitors from all around the world who come to see Michelangelo’s David. A simple, imposing, yet mesmerizing work of the heart and soul.
- Ponte Vecchio: A rather strange bridge spanning the Arno, weighed under by the multi storied shops and a huge crowd.
- Piazzale Michelangelo: A welcome terrace viewpoint across the river, decked with replica artworks. And a wonderful abbey of San Miniato even further up.
- Uffizi Gallery: Full to the brim with artworks from all the famous Renaissance masters. Worth 2 full days if you are really into art, but also can be visited in 3 hours if you want to see only the highlights.
You can visit Florence easily in 1 day, though many visitors feel more comfortable with a 2 day trip. Make sure to try the local Bistecca and have a drink at an Enoteca! Keep a day or two for trips to smaller towns around Tuscany.
