Bilbao is the largest and most cosmopolitan city of the Basque Country. Bilbao has become synonymous with the contemporary Guggenheim Museum, dazzles with its innovative modern architecture. The museum designed by Frank Gehry stands for traditional Basque culture and its openness to embrace all things modern.

While the museum represents modern Bilbao, the Casco Viejo of Bilbao (the seven streets), part of the old medieval town, is still the heart of the city. The old city is famous for its taverns offering tasty pintxos.

The other truly remarkable attraction at Bilbao is the beautiful metro system designed by architect Sir Norman Foster. Uniqueness about the metro stems from the rounded glass structures called “fosteritos,”. Ride the metro to Puente Colgante (“hanging bridge”), an Unesco World Heritage Site.

One day in Bilbao is adequate to see the key sights. However, three days in Bilbao is needed to appreciate uniqueness of Bilbao. It is always a challenge to estimate how many days is needed in Bilbao when visited as part of Basque country itinerary.
