Costa del Sol for kids

What are things to see and do in Costa del Sol that will appeal to children? We plan to visit Costa del Sol for our annual family holiday

Most Helpful Answer

Child-friendly attractions and activities in Costa del Sol

1. Beaches

Kids will enjoy going to the beach anywhere, but I’d recommend the beaches in Nerja (Burriana or Maro) because they often have activities like surfing or diving. If you are staying in Malaga, the beaches in El Palo and Pedregalejo (east of the city) are family-friendly.

2. Tivoli World

Tivoli World, a theme park in Arroyo de la Miel (Benalmádena) has everything from small rides for the toddlers to the scariest ones that appeal to teenagers. Buy a family ticket which offers access to all the rides and is sold at a discount.

3. Water Parks

Costa del Sol is a great family holiday destination because it is home to many water parks. Famous amongst them are Aquamijas (Mijas), Aquavelis (Torre del Mar) and Aqualand Torremolinos.

Of the lot, Aqualand Torremolinos with its 22-m free-fall Kamikaze is the biggest and the most famous. In season, the water parks are crowded with children waiting in long lines for the various slides.

If you are traveling with children, book yourself into one of the hotels with an attached water park. My personal pick is Holiday Polynesia in Benalmadena.

4. Zoo and animal park

Children love Seaworld in Benalmádena and the zoo in Fuengirola. In addition, Benalmádena has a beautiful butterfly park that I really recommend (Mariposario de Benalmádena).

5. Ferris Wheel

If you go to the city of Málaga you can ride the Ferris wheel in Muelle Uno. Ferris wheel have an enduring appeal with children.

6. Museums

Costa del Sol, especially, Malaga has become home to many museums. Some of these museums are designed with children and family crowd in mind. For instance, MIMMA in Malaga which is an interactive museum about music that kids tend to enjoy.

7. Rock of Gibraltar

Head to Rock of Gibraltar as a day trip from Costa del Sol. Children love to climb the 450-m-tall Rock of Gibraltar and also meet Barbary macaques, the only non-human primates found in Europe.

8. Nerja Caves

Get your children to experience the wonder of the caves at Cuevas de Nerja, a spectacular cave system just on the outskirts of Nerja town. For your children to learn and enjoy, opt for the guided tour of the caves.

9. Cable Car

Children and adults alike enjoy the 15 minute cable car ride to the summit of Mount Calamorro. The view from the top is bewitching with views of sea and far away Sierra Nevada. At the summit, you can pay a visit to Eagle education center and stay back for their Birds of Prey show.

10. River Walk

The 5 Km walk trail that begins in Nerja town and winds along the Rio Chillar river is one of the most interesting family activity in Costa del Sol. Though long, the trail is easy and very child friendly. Children just love the Rio Chillar river hike.

There are limitless options when it comes to choosing fun activities for families in the region of Costa del Sol. There is something for every interest: Theme parks, castles, wildlife parks, aquariums, adventure activities, water sports, city sightseeing, and a lot more. To help you narrow down what you could do as a family, let me list down things to do categorically under different coastal towns of Costa del Sol.

A coastal town in Costa del Sol, Benalmadena is known for its one of a kind marine park called Selwo Marina. With large pools, dolphins, interactive programs, and bird shows, it is a recommended half-day outing for families. If you are interested in history, then head to Castillo de Colomares. It is a Castle monument dedicated to the adventures of Christopher Columbus. The architecture of the castle is amazing, and it will be a dream place come alive for your kids. Another site worth mentioning is the Sea Life Aquarium. It is an excellent way to introduce sea animals to your children.

The largest water park in Costa del Sol is in Torremolinos called Aqualand Waterpark. There are plenty of rides and slides, children’s area, bubble pool, and more for an entire day of fun. For a couple of hours, you can visit Jardin Botanical Gardens which has beautiful displays of artifacts, Japanese gardens, fountains and is filled with birds. In addition to these is a crocodile park that is home to 200 crocodiles. It will be a fascinating experience to see these reptiles up close.

Capital of the province of Malaga, Malaga city, is one of the largest cities in Spain. With tourism being one of its important revenue sources, the city has plenty of things to do for travelers of all kinds. Surrounded by mountains, the city is rich in history. You can visit the historic center of Malaga to see architectural ruins on a day-long outing. In Nerja, there is a River pool that is particularly famous among families.

Fuengirola is a town which is also dotted with multiple water parks, parasailing, Go Karting, and dolphin watching.

Many family visitors coming to Costa del Sol end up staying in an all-inclusive holiday resort. There was a program on Channel 4 - The Secret Life of the Holiday Resort.
Hotels with water parks are designed for such tourists so that children do not get out of the confines of the resort.

Unfortunately, such a holiday is a chore and not enriching!
