Best rioja wineries to visit

Which are the best wineries to visit in La Rioja? How to get there from Bilbao?

Most Helpful Answer

Three must visit Rioja wineries

1. Ysios winery in Laguardia

Ysios winery with its stunning design by Santiago Calatrava is a definite must visit.

Showcase winery offering best wine tours
The undulating aluminum waves of the roof can be seen from miles, against the Cantabrian mountains. You can walk around the building of cedar stained with copper, even if you decide not to pay the 15 Eu. to tour the winery.
Getting from Bilbao to Ysios in Laguardia

Take the bus from Bilbao to Logroño and get off at Laguardia. Ysios winery is a 30 minute walk if you have the time or call for a taxi at +34 696461234. The winery entrance charge is 15 Eu.

2. Marques de Riscal

Both the hotel and winery are must-visit

The instantly recognizable Frank Gehry structure is mistaken for a winery but it is actually the luxury hotel complex. You can make bookings for lunch (expensive) at the hotel and then go on a tour of the actual winery, which is housed in a different building near the hotel.

3. Valdelana

This 15th-century winery has a wine museum outlining the history of winemaking in the Rioja Alavesa region. It also has a chapel, a nice restaurant (book in advance) and accommodation in case you want to stay the night.

Getting from Laguardia to Elciego (Marques de Riscal and Valdelana)

You can take a bus from Laguardia Sancho Abarca street, to Elciego, a short 10 minute journey. Buses run twice daily and it costs only 1.60€. A taxi might be a more convenient option.

And if you decide to stay the night in Elciego you can consider La Cueva, a rural house accommodation with dinner served.

There are more than 500 wineries in Rioja; most of them are small family-run wineries that are happy to welcome tourists. In fact, for many of these wineries, income from wine tours rival the money they earn from selling few thousand cases of wine.
