One of the best urban beaches

Barceloneta beach is regarded as one of the best urban beaches in the world. Here are a few pointers for your perfect beach day at Barcelona.

Sunrise at Barcelona beach

Wake up early and make your way to the beach in time to watch the sunrise. Because Barcelona is on the Eastern coast of Spain, the sun comes up over the water. Wake up early to enjoy the beautiful sunrise with someone special. You can even step up your game and enhance the experience by participating in a sunrise yoga class!

Water Sports at Barcelona Beach

If you are into water sports, there's a lot of options around. How about renting a boat or a jet ski? With the right budget, you can even rent a speedboat for a day and blast along the beautiful coast.

Surfing near Barcelona

Barcelona is not world famous for its waves, but that doesn't mean you can't surf here. A little north of the city, in Ocata, are the better surf spots and for casual surfers and beginners, the waves are just fine.

Stand-up paddling

Stand-up paddling is the new trend sport, as it combines the appeal of surfing with the relaxedness of canoeing. Several rental places exist on all the major beaches. And don't hesitate if you've never done it before, it's easy to learn and the shops are more than happy to show you the basics!

Biking at the beach

Hire a bicycle, Tricycle or electric scooter. The lovely beach promenade has designated bicycle lanes.

Just relax at Barcelona beach

If all that activity sounds like way too much trouble, you can of course also sunbathe on the beach or go for a swim. The water is very clean and the beaches in Barcelona are generally very safe. Still, make sure you don't leave any valuables unattended on the sand.

Beach Library

If you forgot to bring your book or toys for the kids, don't worry. Barceloneta has a beach library, the Biblioplatja.

Here you can rent books and beach toys for reasonable prices.

Beach Art

Barcelona is a city of the arts, and that is even apparent on the beach. See Frank Gehry's Peix D'Ohr, the Golden Fish, a remnant from the '92 Olympics.

Or Homenatge a la Barceloneta by Rebecca Horn, a tribute to the beach shacks that once populated the beaches but have disappeared over the years.

When the sun goes down, the bars and clubs around the beach come to life. Make sure you change from your bathing suit into something more appropriate for a night out. Spanish clubs are classy!

Avoid Barcelona beach in peak season

In summer, Barceloneta gets crowded. You will be accosted by vendors selling everything under the sun, mojitos, massages, sunglasses etc. In peak season, the crowd build by 10 AM.

If you are traveling with kids or want to go to a secluded beach you should avoid Barceloneta and head to beaches around Barcelona.
